Department of Children & Youth Affairs Foster Care Consultations

Department of Children and Youth Affairs – Foster Care Consultations

The Department of Children and Youth Affairs (DCYA) is currently undertaking a wide-ranging review of the Child Care Act 1991, the principal legislation underpinning child protection and child welfare in Ireland.   As part of this review, DCYA will be taking an in-depth look at foster care, to see what can be done in legislation and policy to ensure that foster care can best meet the needs of Ireland’s children now and for the next generation.

IFCA has been in consultation with DCYA for some months seeking to have an open policy discussion on foster care; the challenges and needs of foster care today, for both foster families and children in care, the need for policies within the fostering arena which meet the needs of children and those caring for them, and which are applied with consistency  nationally.  We also need to review the concept of permanence for children in foster care and its implications for children and foster families.  To this end they have invited IFCA to attend a consultation event to hear our views as the national organisation that supports foster families and the wider fostering community.

This event will be complemented by three regional consultations which will engage directly with foster carers across Ireland. The overall goal of these consultation is to garner the expertise of foster carers and stakeholder organisations in developing any required amendments to the Child Care Act 1991 and foster care policy more generally and to ensure that foster carers and their representative organisation have the opportunity to contribute to this important agenda.

IFCA will facilitate the hosting of three focus group consultations on behalf of DCYA, in Tuam, Cork and Dublin.  The following are the dates for the regional focus groups:

Mon 21st Oct, Crown Plaza Hotel, Blanchardstown, Dublin, 7pm - 9.30pm

Thurs 24th Oct, Ard na Ri, Tuam, Galway, 7pm - 9.30pm

Thurs 7th Nov, Metropole Hotel, Cork, 7pm - 9.30pm
